ereg_replace Problem

Hallo, ich habe ein sehr kleines Problem...
Wie kann ich ein $ bei einem text löschen?
ICh habe es bis jetzt nur so probiert:

$text = ereg_replace("\$", "", $text); 

Warum geht das nicht?

bei so kleinigkeiten ist str_replace besser geeignet
